History of the Kingdom of Rainecourt

The Founding of Rainecourt

The Age of Fragmentation

Before the kingdom’s unification, the lands now known as Rainecourt were home to a collection of warring tribes, city-states, and nomadic bands. These early peoples were a mixture of humans, Lyrians, and other settlers, each with their own customs, beliefs, and ambitions. The region was rich in resources—precious metals, fertile plains, and bountiful forests—but fragmented politically, leading to constant internal strife.

The Verdant Peaks, the Gilded Ridge, and the Frostfall Mountains provided natural barriers, but the rich land between the mountains was a coveted prize, often fought over by competing factions. While the tribes were strong individually, they lacked unity, which weakened their collective ability to defend against external threats.

King Aurelius Rainecourt

The unification of Rainecourt began with King Aurelius Rainecourt, a visionary leader born into the House of Rainecourt, a family of minor nobility who commanded respect but did not hold true political power. Aurelius, known for his charisma, intelligence, and military prowess, united the fractured kingdoms of Rainecourt through a combination of strategic alliances, marriage, and military conquest.

Aurelius’ most famous victory was the Battle of Silverlight, where he successfully defeated the Wyvern Kings, a powerful clan that had ruled much of the northern territories and controlled valuable trade routes. The battle was a turning point, and Aurelius was hailed as a hero. Following his victory, he called together the disparate leaders of Rainecourt and forged the first unified kingdom of Rainecourt.

In year 1 of the Kingdom, Aurelius crowned himself king, establishing the House of Rainecourt as the royal family. He built Rainecourt Citadel at the heart of the kingdom, a symbol of his reign and a stronghold from which he could exert control over the newly united lands. The Rainecourt Dynasty was born, and with it, a legacy that would define the kingdom for centuries.

The Age of Expansion

Consolidating Power

Following his coronation, King Aurelius embarked on a series of military campaigns and diplomatic marriages to solidify his kingdom’s borders. Rainecourt’s influence expanded both southward into the Drakenspire Mountains and northward through the Verdant Peaks. One of his most important alliances was with the Kray peoples, whose craftsmanship and knowledge of engineering proved invaluable to the kingdom’s development.

During this period, the kingdom's infrastructure was improved with the construction of roads, trade routes, and defensive fortifications. The Gilded Ridge, a region rich in precious metals, became a key source of wealth, fueling Rainecourt’s economic boom.

The Gilded Age

By the reign of King Regar Rainecourt, Aurelius’ grandson, the kingdom had entered its Golden Age. Under Regar’s rule, the kingdom's prosperity reached new heights. Lake Vellian and the surrounding plains flourished, providing bountiful harvests and supporting a growing population. Rainecourt became a center of trade and culture, with scholars, engineers, and mages flocking to the kingdom’s capital, Aurelia’s Hold, to work in the Maxwell Klyne Library and the Tine Academy of Magical Arts.

The Strife of House Ardent

Civil Unrest and the Rise of House Ardent

By the reign of Queen Althea Rainecourt, the unity of the kingdom began to be tested. As the population grew and wealth flowed into the kingdom, so did the ambitions of the nobility. The House Ardent, one of the kingdom’s most powerful families, sought to challenge the Rainecourt family’s rule. The Ardent family, known for their military expertise and vast wealth, claimed that the House of Rainecourt had lost touch with the common people, who were suffering from high taxes and limited land rights.

The political tensions culminated in the Strife of House Ardent, a series of civil conflicts that tore the kingdom apart. The war was brutal, with various factions vying for control over different regions. Ironholt, Grendale, and Silvercrest were heavily contested, as both sides sought to control the kingdom’s vital resources.

The Battle of Silvermoon Hill

The civil war came to a head during the Battle of Silvermoon Hill, where the forces of House Ardent were decisively defeated by Queen Althea’s loyalists. The battle was a turning point, marking the end of the Ardent rebellion and the restoration of the Rainecourt Dynasty’s power. However, the conflict left deep scars on the kingdom, as internal divisions persisted for generations.

Queen Althea’s reign, though marked by peace, was tinged by the aftereffects of the strife. Many families still held grudges, and the political landscape of Rainecourt was forever changed.

War and alliances

War with The Maston Protectorate

After the Strife of House Ardent, the kingdom entered a period of technological innovation under the rule of King Davian Rainecourt, Althea’s son. He sought alliances with Lymeria and a new nation to the west, the Kelian Guard and greater trade with the Kray nations in the Worldspine mountains. This was complicated as, at this time, there was a war to the north between Lymeria and a young Maston Protectorate. King Davian had kept a close eye on the Protectorate as they grew closer to Raincourt borders and the rich Verdant peaks.

It was not too long before the Protectorate claimed the Peaks as theirs by 'divine' right. Raincourt soon found themselves at war.

The war lasted 10 years and during this time, a young Prince Davies would come into his own. Leading many victories and becoming a hero to the citizens of Raincourt and respected by Lymeria for his bravery and intelligence. Before the end of the war, however, King Davian passed and newly crowned King Davies would negotiate the new treaties.

The new boarders saw new allies and King Davies sought to cement alliances and seek new one for trade and defense. He traveled to several nations, signing treaties and establishing embassies. It was in the Kelian Guard where he met Yelena Morvek, daughter of the current Supreme Marshal.

Their marriage cemented a strong alliance. This also allowed a new valuable trade route to the world spine mountains and the Stoneforge Dominion. These trade agreements grew Raincourts steam-tek and even gave birth to a Steam-tek university.

The next 20+ years grew several technological advances and the integration of Magi-tek, thanks to their alliance with the Komu Empire. It also so the birth of the Princess and Prince.

The Isle of Lynthara (Eastern Island Range)

Off the eastern coast of Rainecourt lies the Isle of Lynthara, a large island that is part of the kingdom but somewhat isolated from the mainland. It is home to a smaller mountain range known as The Azure Peaks. These mountains are known for their distinctive blue-hued stone and the unique flora and fauna that inhabit the island.

Strategic Importance: The Isle of Lynthara is crucial for the kingdom’s defense, as it lies at a key position for controlling maritime routes along the eastern coast. The island’s location gives Rainecourt control over important trade routes and makes it a powerful naval base.

The Azure Peaks: These mountains are home to hidden caves and temples dating back to ancient times. They are a source of both mystery and danger, with rumors of ancient artifacts buried deep within their rocky crevices.

The island is also home to the Lyntharan Fortress, which houses the kingdom’s naval fleet. The fortress serves as a central point for controlling sea traffic, making it an invaluable strategic asset.
